Bowmen make up the basic archery component of more primitive factions. While their weapons carry great coverage and accuracy, they however don't do as much damage as would Slingers or even Skirmisher Levy. For so much resources, they deal fairly little damage.

Even so, their vast reach means that they are devastating especially if used in a defensive situation, peppering lightly armoured ranged cavalry or melee units at long range. Bowmen thus might not be of any use against a faction that relies on heavily armoured troops, but if facing a faction with lightly armoured infantry or cavalry such as the Arverni or the Sabaeans, they might be worth considering.

Raise troops of these to cover your own skirmishers and your own infantry, using their superior range to attack enemy skirmisher cavalry and overwhelm cavalry archers. Bowmen are also ideal as units for use against elephant-type units, especially the non-Indian variants which aren't armed with bows.

Although bows clearly had a reach that could well exceed the range of a simple thrown projectile, most early bows were simple "self bows" (made from a single stave of wood), with arrows having stone or bone arrowheads. These would have been effective against unarmoured targets, but by the onset of the Metal Ages the introduction of body armour meant that such arrows weren't sufficiently powerful enough to cause any damage.
