Aside from being capable of ranged attacks, javelin cavalry for most of their part retain their stats - be it light, medium, or shock cavalry.

While most Greek and Roman units can't turn to attack, many others - Barbarian and Middle Eastern  - all have the ability to throw javelins while attacking. Their main weakness is that they cannot target anything behind them.

Thus if you are fighting these units, it is wise to use fast-moving cavalry capable of engaging them from the rear. The fast-moving units of the Spanish and Middle Eastern factions are best for this.
